Bremer Roland

'Roland the Giant at the Town Hall in Bremen', is the largest (and most famous one) of his 26 colleagues in Germany. With a height of 5,55 metres, he is the biggest Bremer, since 1404, he stands in his place as a symbol for right and freedom. According to the legend, Roland was a Breton Paladin and nephew of Emperor Charlemagne, he died in the battle against the Saracens in the Pyrenees. In the French area, heroic songs about him were sung; 1173/77, the cleric Konrad wrote the Middle High German Roland song.
